Dr. Yahia was born in Cairo, Egypt and immigrated to the US in 1968. He studied Chemical Engineering (M.S. & Ph.D., U. Of Wisconsin, Madison, 1971) and International Finance (MA, U. Of Texas, Dallas, 1976 – Monetary Theory.)
He authored two books and many patents. The most recent book is an Amazon.com best-seller and was published by Wiley in January 2010: The Art of Islamic Banking and Finance and one of the top 10% best sellers on Amazon list in its category. Two printings were sold out and a new Second Edition was published as a Textbook in November 2014. It was translated to Turkish in 2016. The book is taught at Regents Univ. in S. Africa, Nazarbayev U, in Kazakhstan and is a reference book at many US major universities.
Dr. Yahia spent 15 years in the Oil Industry in Production, Engineering, Corporate Strategic Planning and Finance in a major American Oil Company and refineries.
He was a member of the team that started the Industrial Bank of Kuwait (1974-1975.) In 1984-1986 he returned to help restructure it. His group started banks in Houston, Texas (1982) and LARIBA Bank of Kazakhstan, Almaty (1994.), the FIRST Islamic Mortgage and Commercial Community Bank in Kazakhstan’s History.
He invested 18 years (1986 – 2003) in the investment banking industry with CitiGroup / Smith Barney where he started (1988), developed the Shari’aa compliant stock screening guidelines with eminent scholars and managed the first ever Shari’aa compliant stock portfolio ($250 million) that achieved superior performance.
Dr. Yahia is known as the Father of Islamic banking in North America. He started LARIBA in 1987. Now, and since 1998, the shareholders also own the first full- service RF (Riba-Free) National Bank in America: LARIBA Bank of Whittier, NA. The LARIBA effort – capital – is from the American community. LARIBA and LARIBA Bank of Whittier have proven that RF (Riba-Free) banking delivers superior results as it was tested in the 2008 financial and monetary meltdown. He participated in the Start Up and Development of the Islamic Banking Industry in Malaysia, the pioneering Royal Award in Islamic Banking and served as a member of a prestigious jury to elect the best Islamic Banker in the world to receive the Global Royal Award in Islamic Finance in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.
He is a prolific speaker, lecturer and author of papers on RF (Riba-Free) finance throughout the world. Dr. Yahia taught his book in an Islamic Banking Course at Nur Sultan Nazarbayev in Astana, University in Kazakhstan, and in Regent University in Durbin, South Africa (2015). He lectured at most of the top US-based Universities like: Harvard, NYU, Univ of Wisconsin, Johns Hopkins U., Istanbul Zaim University, INCEIF in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore Management University, International Islamic University in Malaysia IIUM, Pakistan Universities in Karachi and Lahore, Cambridge, Oxford and London School of Economics to name a few. Dr. Yahia presented his book at all the above in addition to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, UAE, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Argentina, Germany, Switzerland, and France. Dr. Yahia presented Participatory (Islamic) Banking in India and spoke as a guest scholar at the Indian Parliament about Islamic Community Banking in America.
Dr. Yahia is a distinguished Imam and Community leader in North America. He was honored by Allah to participate in developing the masajid and schools’ infrastructure in the USA & Canada. He was the co-founder and Chairman of the Shura Council of S. California which is the umbrella organization of over 75 Centers and Islamic Service organizations in S. California. He and his wife Dr. Magda participated in the start-up and operation of many Islamic Centers and Schools in the US and Canada
He was an invited Jum’aa Imam in most US cities, Canada, India, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad-Tobago, Turkey and the UK.
